Our Methodist Partnership

Our founder, Thomas Bowman Stephenson, was a Methodist minister from the North East of England with a passionate commitment to social justice.

On moving to London, Stephenson challenged the Methodist Church to take action to help homeless children living on the streets.

This is how our charity began

"Our partnership with the Methodist Church continues to grow as we find new ways to broaden the dimensions of our relationship"

Methodist principles

Our ethos is deeply rooted in Methodist principles.

The famous words of John Wesley to 'go not only to those who need you but to those who need you most' describe our vision and values to this day. Likewise, Stephenson’s commitment to his work ‘in the service of the children’ continues to inspire us.

We maintain close links with the Methodist Church in Britain and provide an annual report to The Methodist Conference.

Our board of trustees and all our national committees in England, Scotland and Wales have at least one Methodist representative.

Action for Children Sunday

Action for Children Sunday is celebrated across the Methodist Church in July on the Sunday closest to our anniversary, 9 July (normally the second Sunday). Together we celebrate and give thanks for our work and the extraordinary contribution the Methodist community make.

We produce worship resources to help churches plan their special service.

Methodist support

The generosity of our Methodist supporters never ceases to amaze us.  They support us in so many ways including:

  • Raising funds all year round in impressively creative ways, especially to mark our anniversary in July, at Christmas, and through home collection boxes. In 2016/7, they raised over £1.5m

  • Providing practical gifts like toys for children and items for starter packs for young people who are being rehoused

  • Leaving a legacy gift in their wills

  • Offering their church premises to run some services such as children's centres, parenting groups, early years groups and supervised visits

  • Supporting parents and young people as volunteers in our services

  • Supporting our campaigns for change
