Admin Volunteer, South Worcestershire

mary- admin south worcestershire

I had given up my part time role in education in 2017 to help with my elderly in-laws but still wanted to do something for myself, give something back to the community and perhaps use my existing skills and hopefully learn new ones. I am mindful that if you take the decision to volunteer you really to have to commit to it, as you would a paid role.

Through Do-it I found a volunteer admin role in the Worcestershire area with Action for Children. I started volunteering at Buttercup Children’s Centre in February 2018. My role as a Volunteer Business Support Officer involves reception duties and booking in various health clinics. If families are new to the Children’s Centre I support with the paperwork and keeping our systems up to date. Other duties include giving out information to parents, answering the telephone, dealing with vitamin sales, inputting registers onto systems and occasionally transcribing parents video interviews into script form for Parent Practitioning Team.

I have gained so much personally from volunteering with Action for Children. I feel it promotes a sense of wellbeing and satisfaction as you feel you are contributing/giving back something to society. I have learnt new skills and developed existing skills as well as completing online training.  Meeting new people has been a wonderful experience and I have really been supported by the Volunteer Co-ordinators. I feel part of the team and don’t think I am treated any different to anyone else. Even though I am primarily in an admin role, I still get to see the benefit Action for Children Services have on local children and families and find it such a pleasure to volunteer.
