Sue said: "Fostering means a lot to us – to see the positive changes in children is so rewarding. I can really sit back and see how far they have come.”

Derrick added: "Fostering has open our eyes to a whole new world. With all the training that Action for Children gave us we have been able to give a home to vulnerable children."

Derrick and Sue have seen first-hand what a stable and loving home can do for a foster child and they currently foster two young people, Megan and Lauren. Read Lauren's story here.

Megan has been with them for 3 ½ years now, but has had complex needs ranging from problems with low self-esteem to social isolation.

“After a while we have noticed a remarkable change in Megan, she has really blossomed from that shy girl who wouldn’t make eye contact with you to a young girl who has a grown in confidence. Last year she had the confidence to sing in front of hundreds of people at Canterbury cathedral.”

Derrick said: “Megan had a lot of different placements before she came to us because she had a lot of issues, but we saw beyond that – we just wanted to nurture her and knew that we could offer her a secure home.

"Fostering has been really rewarding for us. If you are understanding and want to help children and young people get the best start in life then fostering is for you"
